등잔 밑은 어두운 법 – 서구인 혹은 기독교 문명인의 한계

그가 바렐라(Vaella)와 이미 과학사의 고전이 된 책(Embodied Mind)을 썻길래 소 발자국이라도 본 줄 알았다. 서구인들이 대량으로 명상을 하고 있긴 하지만, 그들이 겉으로는 이해한 것처럼 보여도, 서구의 문화적이며 근대 과학적인 어떤 사고 페턴과 프레임을 벗어나기란 사실상 매우 어렵다는 것을 이 책은 잘 보여주고 있다. 근본적으로 이 책에서의 톰슨의 오해와 유치한 인식은 그가 불교 보다는 과학과 과학철학이 무엇인지를 전혀 이해하고 있지 못한데서 기인한다. 안좋은 소식은 그 어려움이 비단 서구인들 뿐만 아닌 많은 수의 현대 동양인들의 것이 되었다는 데 있다.

비록 이책의 저자가 불교는 물론 과학에서도 ‘도’에 들지 못했음에도 불구하고, 티벳불교가 가진 어쩌면 그들이 감추고 싶은 괴상한 정신성과 미국 과학자들의 특이한 조증이 뒤얽혀 벌어지는 풍경은 실로 장관이다. 티벳의 독립을 지지한다. 희한하고 재미있는 세상이 될 것이라 본다.

그것이 특정한 학제 안에서 소비될 뿐 보편적인 인간의 현실의 삶으로 환유되지 않는 모든 마음의, 정신의, 학술의 추구는 헛수고다. 서구 역시 한국에서의 동남아스러운 소승적 추구와 좌파 사상의 혼종 같은, 불교의 본질과는 다른 어떤 종류의 에로티시즘에 사로잡혀 있다.
